Safe Amounts and Splitting Up the Stash
For example, if I am in a city where ATMs, banks and money changers abound, then a few days worth of cash is no biggie since I can always go back for more.
However, If I am someplace way out in the sticks where the options for money exchange and retrieval are limited, than advance budgeting and planning is needed.
Another concern of mine is storage. I usually split my cash up into four or even five parts and stash each bunch separately, in undisclosed places. That way if someone takes 1 or 2 parts, (which has never happened by the way,) then I still have 2 or 3 parts left to tide me over.
But What About Other Globe Drifters?
I took the time to ask a few of my fellow travel bloggers how they do this, and they gave me insight into some of their very own "smart travel" drifter tips!
Notice that there are differing ideas and some people share tips that conflict with others. As you read them, please keep in mind that these are all just personal opinions on how to travel smarter. Ultimately, it's up to you.
"Money Safety" Tips From Other Globe Drifters
Sarah from Chasing the Donkey says, "It's kind of dorky, and is not at all good looking, but I use a PacSafe carry bag. As well as using the hotels safe and splitting money and cards between us, we have so far been lucky".
Noel from Travel Photo Discovery says, "Usually when I'm doing a day trip, I just take out an allocation for the day's trip and a credit card. This usually goes in a money pouch along with a copy of my passport.
Eric from Eric Graczyk Travel says, "The use of two wallets is a good way to go. I guess it is essentially the same as separating your money, but I personally never like to have my money loose in in my travel bag and prefer keeping it in a wallet within the bag."
Pablo from Where's Pablo? says, "[I] keep only enough money on me for the day and split it up between my wallet, an empty 'Burt's Bees' tube and sometimes my shoes if I'm wearing the right ones, (hidden compartment)."
Raymond from Man on the Lam says, "I sometimes keep a stash in an envelope taped to the inside cover of a book because honestly, most thieves don't read."
Tammy from Tammy & Chris On The Move says, "As a woman you can take out the cushions of a push up bra and stack your money in the pouch instead."
Tina from Lunch For One says, "Usually I have a bit of money in my pockets, so no need to look for your wallet or open it when I want to buy something. I always use two credit cards & bank cards and split them up - one card with me & the rest is in the luggage."
Cody from Thrilling Heroics says, "I sometimes carry a decoy wallet after being pickpocketed or held up a few times in the world. Some petty cash, an old expired credit card, and ID, and it seems legit, but they won't end up getting much more than a few pesos."
